WA at the Warhammer Masters!
The much renowned "Warhammer Masters" tournament took place over the
last weekend in Sydney, with contenders from all over the country
gathering to do battle and determine who is the Warhammer Master of
2007. For the first time ever in the 4 year history of the Masters
event, this year we were extremely proud to have a WA representative
travel over to compete - in the form of Aaron Thompson, the 2007
Ultimate Warhammer champion!
The Masters is an annual invitational tournament held over in the
eastern states, with only the tournament leaders from around the
country (using the
Irresistible Force Warhammer ranking system)
gaining entry to compete. These 16 players then undergo a gruelling 2
day contest, where during 2 of the rounds they must play using a
random contender's army - just to prove their generalship ability with
an army other than their own! As the overall winner of the WestGamer
Ultimate Warhammer tournament this year, Aaron not only received an
automatic invite to the event, but also a fully paid flight and
accomodation to head over and compete.
To find out more about the Warhammer Masters, head on over to the
Irresistible Force website
where you can find the event coverage, player
profiles and army lists, and the full 2007 event results. - Malignant,

2007 Ultimate Warhammer report!
The second gruelling Ultimate Tournament weekend has just finished this
evening and the results are in! Once again an extremely hard fought
series of battles by the contenders, seeing quite a few surprises and
memorable moments over the course of the weekend. The standard of
armies was brilliant - the quality of selection, paintwork and extra
hobby effort put in truly made this an Ultimate event. Now that it's
all said and done we can finally have a little bit of rest (but not
for long!). We're proud
to announce that the winners are:
ULTIMATE WARHAMMER
CHAMPION
AARON THOMPSON (Chaos Warriors)
Runner-up - Daniel Scragg (Bretonnians)
Ultimate General:
1st place -
Daniel Scragg (Bretonnians)
Runner-up - Mark Siford (Chaos Dwarfs)
Ultimate
Sportsman:
1st place -
Adrian Chia (Nurgle Daemonic Legion)
Runner-up - Kris Petty (Wood Elves)
Ultimate Painter:
1st place -
Adrian Chia (Nurgle Daemonic Legion)
Runner-up - Aaron Thompson (Chaos Warriors)
Ultimate
Hobbyist:
1st place -
Adrian Chia (Nurgle Daemonic Legion)
Ultimate Quiz:
1st place -
Adrian Chia
Runner-up - Luke Chapman

A big pat on the back for all of the Ultimate
Warhammer contenders for their results, and well done once again for
qualifying in the first place! The atmosphere throughout the entire
event was fantastic, and we got to see some really great (and brutal!)
games in action. A long hard year of army building and gaming has
evidently paid off for many of you. Adrian Chia (as you can see above)
did exceptionally well - taking out the top award for 3 categories as
well as winning the Ultimate Quiz!
Above all though, a big salute goes out to Aaron Thompson for winning
the grand prize after a series of extremely hard games. Not only does
Aaron take home the coveted winner's trophy and a few prizes, but he
has won himself an all expenses paid trip to Sydney to compete in the
Irresistible Force Warhammer Masters Tournament next weekend against
the top players in the country! Aaron has also automatically qualified
for Ultimate Warhammer 2008, and secured himself the honour of taking
on Ultimate Judge Luke Retallack (me!) in a special online WestGamer
Battle report! (coming soon)
With that, the 2007 WA tournament season draws to a close. And what a
year! Thanks to the combined efforts of a number of different groups
and games clubs in 2007 I think we have just had the absolute best
year of the tournament scene in WA ever. Running the Ultimate
Tournaments as a fitting finale to that season has been extremely hard
work, and definitely could not have been possible without the combined
work also put in by Mike Basc and JJ Layfield. The hobby community is
extremely lucky to have blokes like these doing the hard yards to make
the tourney scene better for us all.
Full event results for Ultimate Warhammer have been uploaded to the
WestGamer files archive, and
the full missions list from the event can be found
here. Over the
coming weeks
I will be adding a huge amount of coverage from the Ultimate
Tournaments to the site, so keep checking back for news, more results,
event reports, photos and more! - Malignant,

2007 Ultimate 40K report!
Finally after a long year of work and preparation, this weekend the
first annual WestGamer Ultimate Warhammer 40,000 tournament was held -
and the competition was FIERCE! Throughout the entire tournament, the
judges watched the scores with baited breath as the lead changed time
and time again, with most players hovering mere points apart on the
tables. When the smoke finally cleared and the winners were
determined, there ended up only being a mere .5 of a point difference
between the 1st 2nd and 3rd placegetters - making for a tense final
contest! And without
further ado, the winners are:
ULTIMATE WARHAMMER
40,000 CHAMPION
ROB LYONS (Death Guard)
Runner-up - Tom White (Space Wolves)
Ultimate General:
1st place - Tom
White (Space Wolves)
Runner-up - Dave Horne (Eldar)
Ultimate
Sportsman:
1st place - Brad
Warnock (Orks)
Runner-up - Ben Leeper (Tau Empire)
Ultimate Painter:
1st place - Brad
Warnock (Orks)
Runner-up - Shane Warnock (Blood Angels)
Ultimate
Hobbyist:
1st place -
Shane Warnock (Blood Angels)
Ultimate Quiz:
1st place - Drew
Edgar
Runner-up - James Sanderson-Miller

A huge congratulations to all of the players for
their results, and for even making it this far to begin with. The
quality and callibre of the players at this event were very obvious in
the way that everyone performed across the board. A special big
congratulations to Rob Lyons also of course, for taking out the grand
prize this year! In addition to his trophy and a few prizes (including
a brand spanky new Baneblade tank!), Rob has also automatically
qualified for Ultimate 40K 2008, and won himself the honour of taking
on Ultimate Judge Mike Basc in a special online WestGamer Battle
report! (coming soon)
Well, it's been a long, hard but immensely enjoyable weekend. Thanks
to all of the players for being so consistently good, to Brendan Dee
who acted as our cameraman during the event, and to all of our
sponsors and supporters who helped make the event a reality. Last and
certainly not least to my fellow judges Mike and JJ, who worked
tirelessly before and after the tournament to bring you the best event
we possibly could.
Full event results can be accessed in the WestGamer files archive
here, and the
full missions list from the event can also be found
here. Next up
we have the Warhammer Ultimate tournament this coming weekend! Keep an
eye on the news here for more results from that, as well as a huge
number of event reports, coverage, photos and more! - Malignant,

1 week to go!
The final countdown is on to the biggest Warhammer and Warhammer
40,000 tournament showdowns of the year! In just over a week, the
final contenders for Warhammer 40,000 will do battle at the Ultimates,
with their Warhammer counterparts to duke it out the following
weekend. It's the contest we've all been waiting for!
All contenders should be aware that army lists are due, and there are
several other important bits of news for players and spectators alike
that everyone should be aware of. Please ensure that you read the
following threads on the WestGamer forums below:
-
Ultimate 40K details
-
Ultimate Warhammer details
-
Tournament countdown
-
Tournament rules queries
-
Event parking & accommodation
-
Ultimate Warhammer Grand Prize notice
-
Ultimate Warhammer & the Federal Election
Also remember that the events are open to spectators on the Saturday
only of each tournament, and that the Sunday will be closed to
everyone except the players and event staff until the awards ceremony
at 5pm.
On the Sunday night of each tournament we'll be holding an afterparty
across the road at the Belgian Beer Cafe, and everyone (players,
spectators and all Westgamers 18 years +) is invited to attend! Come
on down for a few drinks, chat hobby with the players and find out how
everyone went. It's should be a great weekend followed by a great
night!
Over the coming weeks there will be loads of event coverage on the
Ultimates, including results, photos, interviews, reports, and a few
other special things we have in store. Watch this space! - Malignant,

October 2007
Well, all ticket payments
have been received and all players have been locked in! You can now
check out the Contenders pages to see who made the final list of
competitors and what they're looking to bring. Should be a tight
contest indeed!
All players should now (or in
the next day or two) have received their glossy colour player's guides
along with the event CD. On this useful little disc you'll find a
bunch of extra resources that should help with your tournament
preparations, including blank roster sheets, scoring examples, the
mission lists for both tournaments, and the event designers notes. All
of this content will be made available to the general public after the
events have concluded.
Don't forget also that army
lists are due soon! There is a points penalty for late rosters,
so move now to avoid disappointment!
Two weeks before the event
you must submit a copy of your army roster for the Judges to refer to.
You may submit the list in person (by prior arrangement), by e-mail to
ultimate@westgamer.com or hand it in to the Perth Games
Workshop store. If you expect to have any problems fulfilling this
requirement, make sure you get in touch with the organizers before
the due date. When submitting your roster, make sure you include an
Ultimate Tournament roster coverpage (which you can find on the Event
CD or download from the WestGamer Files Archive).
Also, as fate would have it -
the Australian federal election has been called on the weekend of
Ultimate Warhammer, so it looks like all of the players are going to
need to vote on that day. This is potentially a huge inconvenience for
all of us of course, but we're currently looking at what our options
are concerning this to make for as smooth a day as possible. For more
info, please stay tuned to the Ultimate Tournament Forum.
Only 1 month to go until
Ultimate Warhammer 40,000!

Skulls: Warhammer, the
biggest Warhammer Fantasy Battle tournament of the year took place
over the Queen's Birthday long weekend just passed, and 32 players
battled it out for the remaining invites to the Ultimate Warhammer
competition. When the dust settled, we handed out the familiar black
envelopes making for a group of very happy gamers indeed! All of the
new additions to the competition have been added to the
Warhammer contenders
page, so go check it out.
Furthermore, with all of the
results in we are now able to announce the final two WildCard entrants
for the 2007 Ultimate Tournaments! The lucky recipients are:

Mike Ward - Ultimate Warhammer
President of the NWS
(Napoleonic Wargaming Society) and very long-toothed Warhammer
veteran, A very skilled painter, gamer and great sportsman, Mike is a
very familiar face to many of the Warhammer Tournament players in WA
and even a few over east. He has played in every major Warhammer tournament this year,
except for the NWS "Gauntlet" event which he organised and ran!
Congratulations Mike, another very worthy contender.

Shane Warnock - Ultimate
Warhammer 40,000
Consistently rising higher on
the pile in recent years, Shane Warnock has finally etched his name on
the honour roll in 2007 by winning the "Favourite Player" award at the
GW 40K Grand Tournament and the "Player's choice: Best Painted" title
at Outpost 6030's Skulls 40K earlier in the year. A dedicated Blood
Angels commander, Shane also managed a 7th place overall finish at the
GT with his magnificently painted army - which we are very much
looking forward to seeing at the Ultimates!
So, barring any last minute
changes - the 2007 contenders lists for both Ultimate Tournaments are
complete! Congratulations to everyone who made it in, but be assured -
the real test is yet to come! Well done to everyone who didn't
qualify, but attended an event during the year as well. Don't worry,
there's always Ultimate 2008! Better start planning those armies
now...

In other events this week,
the lucky contenders for Ultimate 40K received an exclusive invite to
attend a special Warhammer 40,000: Apocalypse preview night at the
Games Workshop Perth store to check out the new expansion before its
release! The players were able to come down, check out the book and
play a big game of Apocalypse to see what real mass destruction is all
about. Just another little bonus of being an Ultimate contender!

The time has come to announce
our first round of Wildcard contenders! Congratulations to the
following people who have been nominated by the WA hobby community and
voted in by the judges to gain the exclusive Wildcard invitations to
Ultimate Warhammer and Ultimate 40K this year:

Troy Rule - Ultimate
Warhammer
Troy is known to many on the
WA tournament scene as a fantastic sportsman, and has the accolades to
prove it! In addition to being a skilled general, painter and
all-round hobbyist, he has been a veteran of WA tournaments for many
years. He has played in every major Warhammer tournament this year,
his best place to date being a respectable 6th at the Gamer's Guild
Grand Prix Des Arms event, which placed him only narrowly behind the
other qualifiers thus far for Ultimate Warhammer. Given his recent
efforts at the Warhammer Grand Tournament '07 and a solid playing
history - the Judges feel that Troy is a worthy inclusion to the mix.

Gary Danaford - Ultimate
Warhammer 40,000
Another solid all-rounder, Gary
has been the infamous Tau fanatic doing the rounds at WA tournaments
for a while now - taking out 1st place at the 40K GT in 2006. In
addition to his gaming exploits, Gary has also contributed greatly to
the rise of the Armadale Wargames club and successfully ran the 40K
'Mayhem' tournament earlier this year. He has taken a short break from
his Tau force and concentrated on his Marines more recently, and
whilst he's not set the world on fire - he did manage to win 'Best
General' at the 'Skulls 40K' tournament. This and the work he has done
as a leader in the hobby community has earned Gary a well deserved
spot in the 40K Ultimates contenders pool.
Two Wildcards down and two to
go. The last Wildcard contenders will be announced following the final
qualifying tournament this year ('Skulls Warhammer') and full lists of
all nominations will be posted on the site the following week. Thanks
to everyone to nominated - you've helped make some very happy
hobbyists!
To aid in covering the cost
of running the Ultimate Tournaments (and trying to keep the ticket
price as low as possible for the competitors), we have been running a few fundraising auctions.
Next up is this
fantastic piece of work by the same anonymous local talent (if you happen to
know who - please keep it to yourself!): an expertly painted and
converted model of the infamous Vampire Lord - Mannfred von Carstein.

If you like the look of this
model or simply want to help the fundraising effort for the Ultimates,
please visit the online auction for this spectacular piece
here!
The 'Skulls Warhammer' 2007
tournament is closing in, so make sure you grab your tickets before
it's too late. More Ultimates updates soon!

The Ultimate Warhammer &
Ultimate 40K contenders pages
have just been updated with the winning place-getters from the Grand
Tournament, as well as a handful of the countback contenders that we
announced at the awards ceremony at the same event. Congratulations to
all of the players who made it in - especially to the 40K competitors,
whose list is just about complete.
The Judges are hard at work
at the moment on the players packs for the event which will be made
available along with tickets in a few weeks time. The basic players
packs for Ultimate Warhammer and Ultimate 40K will be made available
for download here on the site, but all competitors will also be issued
with an exclusive competitor's data CD which will contain bonus
material for them alone.
The tickets for the Outpost
6030 Skulls Warhammer tournament have now gone on sale at all of the
usual spots, and remember - this is your LAST chance (barring
wildcards) for qualifying for Ultimate Warhammer 2007. Many people
have responded to this and early buzz is really pumping for this to be
the largest Warhammer tournament turnout event of the year, which
could make it the number #1 seeded event for qualifiers, so make
sure you get along!

The Games Workshop WA Grand
Tournaments are over for another year and we saw a handful of new
contenders announced yesterday, with the placegetters from the GT
picking up invites as well as the announcements of the first stage of
countback entries for Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000. Full names and
photos will be added to this website shortly.
2007 Wildcard nominations are now closed! Thanks to everyone who
nominated someone, and the full list of nominees as well as the
reasons put forward will be released at a later date here on the site.
Well, we said we had a big announcement to make yesterday - and we
did! Thanks to a bit of support from the lads over at
Irresistible Force
who run the Warhammer Masters tournament in the eastern states each
year, this year's grand prize for the
WestGamer Ultimate Warhammer tournament will be a spot in the 2007
Warhammer Masters, as well as all flights and accomodation paid for to
represent WA at the event in Sydney this December!! This is
truly the biggest prize in WA Warhammer gaming history, and we're very
excited to be able to reward this year's champion in such a way. Don't
worry 40K players - we may not be sending the 40K Ultimate champion
over to Sydney, but we do have some other great stuff in store.
So, the last qualifying 40K tournament for this year has just
finished, but we still have one Warhammer one to go. I urge you all to
get into gear and get along to the Outpost 6030 Skulls Warhammer event
in late September, as this will be your LAST chance to qualify this
year for Ultimate Warhammer!
Lots of Ultimate news updates as well as Wildcard announcments in the
next few weeks, so stay tuned...

The Warhammer contenders page
has now been updated with the winning place-getters from the Dropzone
games club's recent "RottQuest" Warhammer event. There are some
extremely talented individuals making their way into the Warhammer
contenders group this year, so it will be very interesting come
November to see what everyone has planned for the big showdown.
Also just added is the
first preview of the Ultimate Tournament scenery! You can now
access the
Previews page to see images of the 1st Ultimate 40K board, the "Valorian
Temple Ruins". We'll be bringing you further scenery previews in the
months to come, so check back here for the latest look at the tables
we'll have on show.
To aid in covering the cost
of running the Ultimate Tournaments (and trying to keep the ticket
price as low as possible for the competitors), over the next few
months we will be running a few fundraising auctions. First up is this
fantastic piece of work by an anonymous local talent (if you happen to
know who - please keep it to yourself!): an expertly painted
Forgeworld resin statue of Asurmen - the hand of Asuryan.

If you like the look of this
model or simply want to help the fundraising effort for the Ultimates,
please visit the online auction for this spectacular piece
here!
A bit of news regarding the
Wildcard spots available at both tournaments - the last date for
player nominations will be Sunday the 12th of August. This gives
us sufficient time to make an assessment of all names put forward and
notify successful nominees in advance before the tournaments. In
particular we would recommend that anyone who has qualified thus far
should put a nomination or two in, as these will be your potential
opponents for the events! To nominate, simply put forward a name and
the reasons why you think they are deserving on the
Wildcard nominations thread, or you can
contact us via e-mail.
The next qualifying event
taking place soon is the big one - the Games Workshop Grand Tournament! This is
your LAST chance to qualify for Ultimate 40K '07 at an event, so if
you want to make it in - be sure to pick up a ticket before they sell
out! Warhammer players have this chance and then one more in late
September for the Outpost 6030 "Skulls" Warhammer tournament.
And speaking of the GT, you
may want to make it down for the awards presentation on day #2 (Sunday
12th August). Not only will we be awarding the top place getters with
the now infamous "black envelopes", but we'll also be revealing the
1st countbacks for each of the Ultimate events! This means that if you
attended a tournament already this year and narrowly missed out on an
invite, you may have a pleasant surprise waiting for you. Last but not
least, we'll be making a very special announcement that will be sure
to get a lot of Warhammer Fantasy battle players VERY excited... We'll
see you there!

The contenders from both the
Napoleonic Wargaming Society "Gauntlet" Warhammer tournament and the
Armadale Wargames "Mayhem" tournaments held recently have just been
added to their respective contenders pages. The number of player
invites is filling out quite nicely now! Don't worry - there are still
plenty of chances coming up for players to prove their might and
qualify at other upcoming events.
As a few events details have
now been confirmed for later in the year, the
2007 Schedule page has been updated
with this new information. Be sure to check it out to see which events
you'll need to attend to become a part of the Ultimates.

Details of the qualifiers
from the Outpost 6030 Skulls 40K tournament held on the weekend just
passed have been added to the
Warhammer 40,000 Contenders page.
Have a look and see the new faces you'll be seeing battling it out at
the Ultimates. Remember - even though we are only issuing invites on
the spot to the top 3 placings at qualifying events, we will be doing
countbacks a little later in the year where players a little further
down the results ladder will likely receive an invite as well. For
details on how it all works, be sure to read the
Qualifying notes.
Also, to give everyone a bit
of a demonstration as to how the qualifying process works (it really
is very simple), I've set up a "hypothetical" list of qualifiers - had
we run the Ultimate Tournaments in 2006. Here you'll see notes on the
process, and who would have gotten in last year based on the scores
available from the various tournaments held in WA. Quite interesting
to see what could have been, so take a look! You'll find the thread on
the main WestGamer site
here.
Next qualifying event up is
the
Napoleonic Wargaming Society "Gauntlet"
Warhammer tournament! Also, be sure to check back soon when we'll have the first preview of the Ultimate Tournament
tables to reveal!
