This announcement specifically concerns the Warhammer Fantasy Battle
tournament at the 2012 WestGamer Ultimates. (It does not concern the other two tournaments for 40K and Warmachine/Hordes.)
Since its inception, the WestGamer Ultimates have been created as a format in which the top players of the state take part in a high level hobby competition to determine the best players and hobbyists in WA. This will be the 6th year of this premier tournament, and we are growing bigger and better then ever in 2012 with the addition of a Warmachine & Hordes event to the lineup as well.
One of the things over the years that has made the Ultimates unique and added the the special nature of the event is the invitational aspect of the tournament. The fact that we only invite the top hobbyists in WA to attend adds to the honour and prestige of competing, and guarantees that after a tough year of fighting to qualify, players will be rewarded with a battle against the best to determine who deserves the ultimate title! Traditionally we have set the invite number at 16 players for each tournament for this reason. It ensures that we only invite the (roughly) top third or quarter of the active players in the state - making such an invitation a privilege indeed.
As many of you are probably aware, the Warhammer Fantasy Battle tournament scene has slowed down considerably over the last 12 months nationally, and WA is no exception to this. Whilst there are still a good number of Warhammer players and events being run in our hobby community, it is no longer possible to argue with the obvious stats. Often with periods of great change in a particular game system (such as a new edition) we see a movement of experienced players into other areas and the additon of many new players - but this can take a while to flow through into the tournament scene.
As a result of this - this year we have made the difficult decision to reduce the number of available invites to the Ultimate Warhammer tournament to 12. (10 ladder qualifiers and 2 wildcards.)
In order to preserve the integrity of the event, this move has been necessary to ensure that we continue to invite the top tier of the players in WA, rather than just the majority of the current active players. Cancelling the Warhammer tournament is a result we thankfully are still quite far from needing to be concerned about, but with only 38 active players currently competing at WA tournaments over the last 12 months (and an average event turnout of 17 players), we need to address the balance. Our hope is that this is simply a temporary change to the format, but we will see what next year brings.
Irrespective of this format adjustment - rest assured that the tournament will still be a tough, hard fought contest where the best come to do battle and show off their quality in the hobby! We will be pulling out all the stops to ensure a fantastic event as usual, and we do not expect this change to distract from the enjoyment of everything else going on. It's not long now until the big weekend, but if you want a final chance to qualify for Ultimate Warhammer - then I strongly suggest that you check out Skulls Warhammer 2012
, whick will probably be your last chance to earn one of the coveted Ultimate invites!
