Let the battles begin!

The WestGamer Tournament League is a perpetual gaming competition to determine the best generals and hobbyists in the state, by measuring ongoing performance at WA tournament events.

There are 3 separate league competitions, each for Western Australia's most popular tabletop wargames: Warhammer Fantasy Battle, Warhammer 40,000 and Warmachine / Hordes.

League Ladders

League ladders will be published for each game system ( 2 each for Warhammer & Warhammer 40,000 and 1* for Warmachine/Hordes) to determine the state's top competitors in 2 separate areas of skill. The Standard League Ladder and the General's League Ladder.

STANDARD LEAGUE LADDER
This ladder represents each player's overall results at tournaments they have attended throughout the year. As most events tend to base their overall placings on a combination of gaming ability, painting, sportsmanship, and sometimes army composition - this will typically represent a player's ability across the hobby as a whole.

GENERAL'S LEAGUE LADDER
This ladder represents each player's results in Generalship (or gaming ability) at tournaments they have attended throughout the year. As all events have a gameplay element to their scoring, this ladder reflects a player's raw skill at the game itself without inclusion of some of the other more subjective forms of scoring for hobby elements.

*Note that as Warmachine/Hordes tournaments do not tend to feature scoring categories other than game results (to determine overall placings), we will only be running a General's League ladder for this system.

League Scoring

EVENT POINTS
Each tournament event a player competes at during the year will give them a score depending on how well they perform. This value is easy to calculate and is based on the size of the event (number of players), as well as the position that the player finishes in. Event points are worked out separately for both the Overall (combined results) category at tournaments, and for the Generalship (game results) category - giving players both a Standard and a General's event score respectively*.

At the end of a tournament, the maximum total points available for a player to earn relate to 3 event size categories as follows:

Small Event (Up to 23 Players) = Maximum 800pts
Medium Event (24 - 35 Players) = Maximum 900pts
Large Event (36+ Players) = Maximum 1000pts

The winner will earn points equal to the maximum available for that size category event. From there onward, players earn less points incrementally related to the number of players at the event. Even coming dead last will still earn you some points! A simple way to work this score out is:

Event points =

(Maximum Points Available / Number of Players)
X
(Number of Players - Individual Placing + 1)

All event point values are rounded up to the next whole number.

Example: Ben attends a 26 player Warhammer 40,000 tournament (a medium size event) and finishes 5th overall, with 8th place in the Generalship category. He therefore has a Standard event score of 762 [(900/26)x(26-5+1)] and a General's event score of 658 [(900/26)x(26-8+1)].

*Note that in the case of a tournament having no categories other than Generalship (which is all that is counted for the overall result), then competing players will only have a General's event score recorded.

LEAGUE POINTS
A player's score for either the Standard Ladder or the General's Ladder is calculated by taking their best two Event Point scores (in the relevant category) for the current year and adding them together. It doesn't matter how many tournaments a player has competed in throughout the year - only the best 2 results will count towards their League Score at any given time. The only way for a player to improve their League Score is to achieve a better Event Point score at a tournament (thus this becomes one of their top 2 results), or by earning a Podium Bonus (see below).

In the case of 2 events giving a player the same number of points, the larger event will be counted - or failing that - the event that took place most recently.

PODIUM BONUS
Achieving a "podium finish" (1st, 2nd or 3rd place overall or in an individual category) at an event is a recognisable achievement, and even more so as the size of the event increases. With more players to compete against for the coveted awards, finishing in a podium position becomes increasingly difficult. As such, bonus points* are awarded in the league to players who achieve event podium finishes in the overall and generalship categories according to the event size:

1st Place Podium Bonus Points = Number of Players x 2
2nd Place Podium Bonus Points = Number of Players
3rd Place Podium Bonus Points = Number of Players x 0.5

All podium bonus point values are rounded up to the next whole number.

*Note that these bonus points are applicable to ALL EVENTS a player participates in - not just those with their two highest placing finishes. This gives players an additional incentive to continue attending tournaments and achieving wins to improve their league score.

Example: John's two highest scores in generalship at Warhammer tournaments for the current year are 975 and 819, giving him a current total of 1794 for the Warhammer General's League. His score of 975 was as a result of finishing 2nd for generalship out of 40 players, so this gives him 40 Podium Bonus points. In addition, he managed to win 1st place in generalship at another event during the year with 16 players, so this gives him an additional 24 Podium Bonus points. John's current score in the Warhammer General's League is therefore a respectable 1858.

TIED PLACINGS
An effort will be made to resolve ties where possible at both an Event Point and League Point level.

- If two players are published as occupying the same position in either an Overall or Generalship category at an event, we will refer to the tournament player guide or rules in the first instance to determine if any tie break conditions have been determined by the organiser. Failing this, the next largest category at the event (as per overall score weighting) will be used to break ties in each case. If after these steps are followed, a tie remains - then both players will receive equal points for the Ladder.
- If two players have the same League Points and therefore occupy the same position on the relevant League Ladder, then the player who has scored the highest single Event Points score for that category during the year will be placed ahead.

SUMMARY
So in summary, a player's position on both the Standard League ladder and the General's league ladder is determined by their League Points.

League Points are made up of a player's best 2 scores over a 1 year period, added together with any Podium Bonus they have received for that category during the year.

League Events

In order for an event's results to count towards the WestGamer Tournament League, it must meet the following minimum standards:

ALL EVENTS
- The event must open to anyone from the gaming public (IE; not exclusive to a set club or group).
- The event must meet the minimum standard of 12 players (this minimum applies to the number of players competing from start to finish and does not include "ringers" or "stand-ins").
- Current editions of the game rules (at the time of the event) must be used. In the case of new release game rules and faction/army/codex books, a 1 month grace period is often customary however, and is quite acceptable.
- League points will only be gathered from individual placings. Team and "doubles" placings will not count.
- It must be a WA event.
- Results from the event must be published on (or made available via) WestGamer within 1 month of the event being run. Any results released to the public outside of this period will not be counted.

WARHAMMER EVENTS
- All game sizes must be a minimum of 1500 points and at least 4 rounds must be played.
- Due to the extreme nature of Warhammer games using the "Storm of Magic" expansion, tournaments permitting the use of rules from this book are not considered as League events.

WARHAMMER 40,000 EVENTS
- All game sizes must be a minimum of 1500 points and at least 4 rounds must be played.
- Due to the extreme nature of Warhammer 40,000 games using the "Apocalypse" expansion, Apocalypse scenario tournaments are not considered as League events.

WARMACHINE & HORDES EVENTS
- All game sizes must be a minimum of 35 points and at least 4 rounds must be played.
- Warmachine & Hordes tournaments using the "Unbound" expansion rules for large games are not considered as League events.
- Tournaments with other significant variations from the standard formats (such as the "Foodmachine" can cheating mechanic) that affect gameplay are not considered as League events.

The WestGamer Tournament League organisers reserve the right to exclude any event from the League if we believe that it does not meet suitable format requirements for scoring.

Best In Faction

In addition to the Standard and General's Ladders of the WestGamer Tournament League, we will also be running an annual contest to determine who is the best general for each army or faction across each of the 3 game systems!

Commencing October 2011, all results collected for the league will also be used to determine the top Generals for each core faction or army. This will be published on an ongoing basis along with each of the League Ladders. The Best In Faction players for each game system will be publicly awarded with a small prize at the annual WestGamer Feat of Arms event, as well as announced on the forum at the end of each season running from 1st Oct - 30th Sept.

Player's faction scores are calculated in much the same way as for the General's League ladder for each game system. We take a player's best 2 General's Event scores with a single faction over the 1 year period, added together with any Podium Bonus they have received for that category to determine their position within the Faction Ladder.

Players may be recorded for multiple factions if they use different ones at different events throughout the year - making it possible for players to actually compete for the top position in more than one (difficult - but possible!).

Schedule & Updates

Updates to each of the League Ladders will be made periodically during the year as events are run and results are published. Ladder updates will typically be made within 1 week of published tournament results. In the case of any gaps in data, amendments will be ongoing as this information is collected.

In addition to the above, there will be a regular update (where necessary) at the end of each month to account for events dropping out of the current 12 month League period and being removed from the Ladder scores. Due to the timing of various events shifting each year it is possible that there will be some slight overlap with results from the same event name from year to year for short periods.

Information For Organisers

PROMOTING YOUR EVENT
One of the key goals of the WestGamer Tournament League is to encourage players to attend as many events throughout the year as possible, hopefully contributing to a boost in event attendance. We recommend that any tournament organisers running events that meet the minimum league standards should take advantage of this and advertise their status to players as a participating event!

Organisers can also feel free to use the WestGamer Tournament League badge images below in any players guides or promotional material (flyers, posters, ads) to advertise participation in the league to any potential attendees. (Alternate size images are available upon request.)

SUBMITTING RESULTS
Submitting event results for the league is just as simple as it's always been. Just publish the results in any standard format (plain text or .pdf is recommended) and link to a WestGamer Forum post. Players can feel free to link to results on the forums as well if they are published elsewhere.

To assist us in gathering data for the League from your event results, please ensure that the individual player placings are listed clearly for each relevant category and factions/armies used by players are recorded where possible. Including information on how player ties are resolved for the event results is very helpful as well.

REMEMBER to get your event results published in a timely manner! Results from events must be published on (or made available via) WestGamer within 1 month of the event being run. Any results released to the public outside of this period will not be counted. There will be no exceptions to this, so don't delay and risk angry players!

Event results can also be Emailed to league@westgamer.com
